Description

While there isn\'t a single, universally accepted \"Moolmantra\" (primary mantra) for the entire Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa in the way that Om Namah Shivaya is for Shiva or Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya is for Vishnu in general, there are a few key concepts and verses that encapsulate its essence:\r\n\r\n1. The Opening Verse (Mangalācharaṇam)\r\nThe very first verse of the Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa is often revered as the essence, or the Mūlamantra of the text, as it sets the philosophical foundation:\r\n\r\nSanskrit Text:\r\n\r\nजन्माद्यस्य यतोऽन्वयादितरतश्चार्थेष्वभिज्ञः स्वराट्। \r\n\r\nMeaning:\r\n\r\n\"Let us meditate upon that Supreme Truth (Satyam Param) from whom the creation, sustenance, and dissolution of this universe proceed; who is conscious and self-effulgent (Svarāṭ); who is directly and indirectly cognizant of all manifestations; who imparted the Vedic knowledge (Brahma) to the first created being (Brahmā); and by whose illusory energy (māyā) even the greatest sages are bewildered, just as one is deluded by the unreal exchange of light, water, and earth (e.g., mirage); in whom the triple creation (sarga) appears real, though it is not; and in whom all illusion (kuhakam) is eternally dispelled by His own divine potency. We meditate on that Absolute Truth.\"\r\n\r\n2. The Dvaādaśākṣara Mantra\r\nSince the Bhāgavata is primarily a text about Lord Krishna/Vishnu, the standard primary mantra for Vishnu/Narayana is highly relevant and often associated with the text:\r\n\r\nText:\r\n\r\nॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय\r\n\r\nTransliteration:\r\n\r\nOm Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya\r\n\r\nMeaning:\r\n\r\n\"Obeisances to the Lord, the son of Vasudeva (a name of Lord Krishna/Vishnu).\"\r\n\r\n3. The Central Theme\r\nThe core message of the Bhāgavata is pure, selfless devotion (Bhakti Yoga) to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna (Vāsudeva).\r\n\r\nIf you were looking for the text that is often recited at the beginning of a Bhāgavata Saptaah (a seven-day recitation), it is usually the first verse quoted above, followed by verses in praise of the spiritual master, Vyasa, and the text itself.
